Activity Description
In order to establish a baseline vocabulary, a class discussion is framed around a slide presentation. Basic concepts in genetics are reviewed including:
- Cellular Structure
- DNA and genes
- Genetic variation

Up to 1.5 hours
Activity Objectives
Students will be able do the following as a result of the activity:
- Identify the cellular location of DNA
- Accurately define DNA
- Explain in simple terms how genetic variation identifies individuals or species
Activity Prerequisites
Since this is one of the earliest activities there are no prerequisites.
Activity Instructions
- Give slide presentations reviewing basic genetic concepts
- Encourage class feedback and questions and dialogue during presentation
- Administer quiz at the end of the class to assess and reinforce the topics learned
Assessment
A short quiz that reviews the topic from the class discussions and presentation.
