Review of Genetics

Activity Description

In order to establish a baseline vocabulary, a class discussion is framed around a slide presentation. Basic concepts in genetics are reviewed including:

  • Cellular Structure
  • DNA and genes
  • Genetic variation

Estimated Time of Activity

Up to 1.5 hours

Activity Objectives

Students will be able do the following as a result of the activity:

  1. Identify the cellular location of DNA
  2. Accurately define DNA
  3. Explain in simple terms how genetic variation identifies individuals or species

Activity Prerequisites

Since this is one of the earliest activities there are no prerequisites. 

Activity Instructions

  1. Give slide presentations reviewing basic genetic concepts
  2. Encourage class feedback and questions and dialogue during presentation
  3. Administer quiz at the end of the class to assess and reinforce the topics learned

Assessment

A short quiz that reviews the topic from the class discussions and presentation.
