Since New York City provides a rich resource for student explorations, the CUNY GK12 Project focuses on the urban envrionment as a research subject and research environment. Sample student research projects include: how birds adapt tp the urban environment, access to green space in the urban environment and issues of environmental justice, how toxins affect and interact with living organisms, bee colony collapse, the types of wildlife that are found in cities and how they survive in an urban environment, and the biodiversity of New York City through DNA barcoding.Participation in these and many of the project’s other research topics enables student researchers to become citizen scientists, achieve higher levels of success in city, state, and national science research competitions, and improve their college eligiblity.
