Activity 5-How are Biotic and Abiotic Factors Observed in a Freshwater Ecosystem?

 POND WATER – A CLOSER LOOK

Estimated Time of Activity: 60 minutes

Goals: Process Skills and Content Knowledge:

  • Students will be able to distinguish between different organisms living in pond water.
  • Students will be able to make a wet mount slide.

Materials:

  • Pond Water
  • Slides with coverslips
  • Microscope
  • Medicine dropper
  • Student Activity Sheet (link coming soon)

Activity Instructions:

  1. Go through Virtual Pond Dip animals and have the students write the name of the organisms that correspond to numbered organisms.
  2. Place a Petri dish of pond water at each station and have students use a hand lens to see what they can see.
  3. Have students answer the question corresponding to the previous activity above on the student activity sheet.
  4. Have students make a wet slide with a drop of pond water and have them examine the slide at low power and then at high power.
  5. Have students answer the question corresponding to the previous activity above on the student activity sheet.
  6. Have them sketch two organisms and have them take notes and answer questions 6 and 7 on student activity sheet.
  7. If time permits, have students fill out the Index of Organsims for the two animals that they sketched using the Identification Keys provided.

Pre-Activity:

Have students identify the numbered organisms in the Virtual Pond Dip jar.

Assignments:

Have students complete their student activity sheets by answering all the questions. Depending on the level of your students, you can have them complete the index of organisms on two organisms found in the jar as a take home assessment. Give the students the website: http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/index.html?http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/ponddip/index.html  and instruct them as how to use the website.

Assessment:

  1. Completion of student activity sheet.
  2. Completion of Index of organisms using the website.
